31ft Renovation: The Good, Bad and Ugly… Very, Very Ugly & Very, Very Bad

The original interior:

The original upholstery has gritty sand coating it and every other surface. All the solid surfaces are sticky with weeping vinyl from the 70’s. This will be a challenge to deal with later.

That pillow? There to protect the sitter from being stabbed in the backside by rusted metal slicing through the goucho pull out! We were warned by the previous owner. WOW!

image

There is no way to test any of the appliances and the previous owner claims to not have any idea. That makes me nervous but let’s hope for the best.

I really hope this spiffy and fairly new Norcold refrigerator works. These are expensive and we really do not want to replace it. Propane and electric functionality is essential for us so a standard much cheaper house unit would not work.

That odd patch of carpet is suspect…

Ugly and filthy 1979 bathroom is yellowed and stinky.

Airstream subfloors are flat plywood sheeting… Why is there a step up into the bedroom? This can’t be good.

image

All of the vista window have fogging and funk growing between the double panes.

image

The step up in the bedroom is due to this carpet underlayment. It has been installed on top of the original green carpet. This is where the ripping and tearing will begin since there is clearly a huge issue in the bed room.

image

Wait… What is going on here?

White carpet gone, underlayment gone, green carpet showing and a giant horseshoe of plywood around the bed and on top of the original carpet and subfloor?

Anyone that has tried to cut the curve of an Airstream subfloor knows that it is really hard and tedious and a huge amount of work. Why go through that and put it on top of the original carpet?

image

After the plywood was removed, the floor was no longer solid to stand on.

image

Mystery solved! There was no floor… there was wood pulp mud. So much for a quick cosmetic fix. The subfloor in the bedroom is going to have to come out. Might as well get started right away!

image

Bed removal begins.

Although gross, no evidence of rodents! That is a small victory!

image

The rot is gone. Now the channel for the subfloor is being cleaned and the bolts are being cut so the fresh plywood can be installed.

Fresh plywood and insulation installation begins.
