1979 31ft Renovation: Rebuilding and Chasing Windmills

Everything is leaking! Chasing leaks is like chasing windmills. Windows, walls, belt lines, pipes, toilet… you name it… it leaks. It is exhausting mopping up everything and continually encountering more issues. You learn to dread rain and simultaneously hope for it so you can follow the drips and streams of water seeping out from all over the coach. The leaks are a work in progress.

We are pushing to get the 31ft Airstream minimally functional and then the 23ft empty so we can work on the interior of that unit. It will be a little rough going for a while living under construction.

With winter coming and temperatures dropping, we are under the gun to get things accomplished. The business storage is the priority and the entire reason for the move to the larger coach. We opted to design and build the storage first and design the rest of the Airstream around it.

After the storage was based out, we started on the kitchen. We got an amazing deal on some Ikea Pax wardrobes and opted to use that as a building material. It would have been preferable to use high end wood but the white mdf was a quick modification and almost free. Almost.

Once the storage was based out, we began the kitchen. It has less surface area and usable space due to the bathroom in the middle of the Airstream.

Fully extending drawers really make this storage useful and accessible. No dark, impossible to reach corners.

Boxing in the furnace so the counter can be supported.

Test fitting the almost free beech butcher block counter.

Notching and cutting for a nice fit was stressful but not particularly difficult.

Notching for the vent pipe, to be covered somehow at a later date.

The sink goes in after the counter is seated.

Cutting out for the stove was hard and stressful. A mistake could have been very very expensive. We only had one shot to get this right.

Look at the really good fit! Now to find out if the stove works or needs repair!

Faucet was on super clearance and therefore suddenly in our price range. Why not have a fancy, high quality faucet in the trailer?

We have FIRE!!!!

How to make the under sink area useful? Trash and recycling on glides. Once again, thank you Ikea.

Cue water! Leaks everywhere! We decided at that moment to rip out all the old lines and install new PEX. It could have been really hard pulling the old lines and fishing around trying to put the pipe into one hole in the floor and have it pop out on the other side of the trailer. Surprisingly, it went quickly and easily.

It slides all the way out and has two bins with lids.

Coming soon: The bed!
