1979 31 ft Airstream Renovation: Icky, Sticky and Messy

Under construction!

Everything is filthy, sticky and coated in sawdust. I think we have remarked on the weeping vinyl in an earlier post. We decided to test different paints to see if we could cover the terrible surfaces that we dread brushing our arms against.

We used a low VOC paint and primer after a light sanding and cleaning. It looked bright, white and was relatively low oder. It lasted 24hrs and then started to weep though the paint and primer.

This is what it looked like. It was a disappointing show for the lovely not stinking paint. We went out and bought the latex based Kilz primer and had very similar results. We stayed with a friend overnight and left the windows open for this smelly application.

The Kilz latex based primer worked better then the low VOC primer and paint but not remarkably. We were two gallons of paint into the project with an entire Airstream to clean and paint a fresh bright white. Nothing is working!

We tried again with an oil based paint that is hard to apply and is really really sticky and odiferous. It shows brush marks and at this point is ugly but working. It is able to hold back the sticky but has turned slightly yellow as the days pass.

Then we bought a gallon of oil based Kilz. It also is holding back the weeping goo but it has a matte finish and will need two coats before the paint layer.  When we went to wipe it down for a second coat, it was a mess. It was dingy, streaked and everything stuck to it. The oil-based Kilz seems to collect all the dirt and sawdust and was terrible to clean before the second coat. It will need to be sanded and cleaned thoroughly before we test it further.  Additionally, the smell was intense. We slept elsewhere and had sore throats from the fumes even though everything was well ventilated. What an icky, sticky mess!
